Russian Academic Archeology


Russia Post released a set of 4 stamp on 26th August 2019 to celebrate 100 years of  Russian Academic Archeology. The stamp depicts the figure of a woman, IV millennium BC, Fish", II millennium BC, "Bison", XX thousand BC and the White Sea petroglyphs, IV millennium BC.


In 1919, the Russian Academy of the History of Material Culture (RAIMK) was founded to study archeology and material monuments of antiquity. Later, the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow and the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg were formed on its basis. The main activities are the study of archeology and history of Ancient Russia and the stone age of Eurasia; study of early agricultural cultures and urban civilizations of Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Middle and Near East; analysis of Greek-barbarian contacts in the Northern Black Sea region; study of the interaction of tribes and peoples in Eastern Europe and the Baltic region.
