A special cover was released to celebrate 10 years of Indian Scientific Expedition to South Pole on 4th January 2021 at Mormugao.
The first Indian Scientific expedition to the South Pole is a milestone in Indian endeavor to understand the mysteries of the Antarctic environment and its implications for climate change. An eight-member team embarked on an inland traverse from Maitri Station in four specialised vehicles on 13th November 2010. Covering a distance of 2300 KM through mountains and over the polar plateau braving temperatures as low as 53 degree celcius below zero. the team reached the South Pole on 22 Nov 2010. The expedition strengthened our operational capabilities and opened new avenues for scientific exploration in Antarctica.
