Veena is an age old popular musical instrument manufactured in Gollapalli Village in Vizianagaram District, Andhra Pradesh. Bobbili Veena is a large plucked string instrument used in Carnatic Classical Music. It is carved out of a single piece of jack wood. The veena is named after Bobbili, a place where it was invented in 17th Century. At that time, playing veena was a common practice in India, especially South India. Bobbili kings were fond of music and encouraged sarvasiddi craftsmen to make this musical instrument. The craftsmen carve out 200 to 300 miniature veenas a month while it takes 20 days for a craftsman to make a professional Veena. Bobbili Veena has given rise to Veena sampradayam, whose exponents have earned acclaim from Indian and international audience. Bobbili Veena is a heritage pride of Andhra Pradesh and occupies an esteemed place among several age-old Indian musical instruments.
