Korea Coast Guard.

Korea Post issues a stamp to commemorate 60th Anniversary of Korea Coast Guard on 10th September 2013.

Created under the name of the National Maritime Police on December 23, 1953 under the authority of the Public Security Bureau of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Korea Coast Guard has been promoted in status to the Maritime Guard, and to the Korea Coast Guard. Launched with a crew of approximately 600 and with merely 6 patrol boats, the Korea Coast Guard has grown into a giant organization currently boasting 10,000 elite crews, around 300 patrol ships, and 23 air crafts, in addition to 4 regional headquarters, 16 coastguard stations, a maintenance workshop, and the Korea Coast Guard Academy.

The Korea Coast Guard’s mission includes: preventing illegal fishing; confronting threats of maritime terrorism; ensuring a safe fishing environment for the fishermen near the West Sea NLL (Northern Limit Line), a politically and militarily sensitive zone; protecting fishery resources; conducting swift search and rescue activities in the sea; defending the maritime sovereignty over Dokdo, Ieodo, and EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) and protecting the maritime environment to ensure a clean sea to be passed down to future generations.
On the occasion of its 60th anniversary, it is the hope of the Korea Coast Guard to provide an ever more forward reaching service. Therefore, in acknowledging their undisputed leap toward the future, a commemorative stamp is issued, featuring both the emblem of the Korea Coast Guard and the 3005, a 3,000 ton class, large patrol ship.
